What Should You Do At a Guitar Store While Shopping?

Guitar Shopping for Beginners

If you don’t have prior experience playing the guitar, you’ll have a more pleasant shopping experience if you talk to the associates at the store, allow them to educate you, and ask plenty of questions. Don’t pretend to be an expert. You may also want to start off by telling the store owner what your goals are with the instrument. If you are enrolling in lessons and plan to practice for several hours every week, they may help you find a higher-end instrument that can serve as an investment. If you plan to be a casual acoustic guitar player, they’ll offer you something relatively cheap.

Whatever you do, don’t disrespect the store owner by mishandling the instruments, fooling around with a guitar when you know you can’t play, or other similar activities.

Guitar Shopping For Experienced Guitarists

You don’t need us to tell you what to do - have fun shopping around for guitars. Of course, avoid playing “Stairway to Heaven” in the store, holding a full-on practice session, or commandeering the showroom floor for hours with no intention of buying.

Tips For Buying a Used Guitar in Philadelphia

Call Around Before Visiting

Local stores rarely keep their used guitar inventory listed online - it turns over too quickly, and who has time for that? If you have a specific brand in mind, do yourself a favor and call the store ahead of time. They will even be happy to recommend an alternative if you aren’t too opinionated. You will almost certainly find used Yamaha, Gibson, Fender, and Guild guitars, but you might have to call around for a Seagull, Epiphone, Washburn, or other pre owned brand.

Take a Friend Who Can Play, If Possible

It never hurts to have some experience in your court. Guitar store owners don’t have the same seedy reputation that used car dealers have, but you’ll feel more confident about your purchase if you have a friend or acquaintance who can try the guitar out for you before you buy it.
