Concepts You Will Learn in Our Philadelphia Music Lessons

The Fundamentals of Your Instrument

Firstly, we will help you learn the basics of the piano, violin, guitar, violin, or singing. We’ll work on proper technique, breathing, posture, and sound production, and we will send you home after each lesson with accessible, fun, and effective practice techniques that you can use on your own. We can even start working on real pieces of music with you right away.

The Fundamentals of Music

We help our students understand and appreciate music on a deep level. You will learn note reading right away, and we’ll work on counting, rhythm, time signatures, and musical form. In short, we want you to have the most solid foundation possible as you pursue excellence in your chosen instrument.

Music Theory - Basic and Advanced

Some teachers help their students learn pieces by rote – that is, you would drill passages until they become part of your “muscle memory.” That is effective, but we want you to understand the nuts and bolts of the music you are playing. We’ll tackle key signatures, major and minor modes, transposition, and so much more, and we can get as in-depth about music theory as you would like.

You Can Learn Songwriting, Composition, and Improvisation

As an extension of the music theory training, you will be able to write and improvise your own music. We can help you write folk songs, compose piano or chamber music, or learn the fundamentals of ear playing and improvisation in various genres.

We can’t cover each music concept on this page, but we realize that no two students are the same. We will tailor the lesson experience to your needs, and we love incorporating a student’s specific goals, questions, and curiosities into our material.

Private Lessons and Fun Group Classes

We offer private music lessons for all ages at our studio locations. We believe in the efficacy of one-on-one instruction with an expert teacher, and we will also hold on to that core belief. Your teacher will be friendly and encouraging, and they will work specifically with you to achieve your goals. If you don’t know exactly what you are looking for, they will rely on their expertise to guide you.

We also offer group classes for elementary aged children at our Bella Vista studio location. Our classes use musical games, lots of singing, and rhythm instruments to teach the fundamentals of music while unlocking your child’s artistic curiosity.

Building a Community of Musicians in Philadelphia

We want our adult students, pre-college students, and their families to meet each other and become part of the wonderful musical community at the Institute.

Recitals

Our student recitals are held at third-party locations in Center City, and you or your child will have the opportunity to perform one or more pieces that they have been practicing. It’s a great chance to learn how to prepare, how to perform, and how to communicate with others through music. Of course, our teachers help their students in every aspect of recital preparation.

Studio Classes

We occasionally hold fun and informal studio classes at our Bella Vista and Queen Village studio locations. In these sessions, groups of students from the same teacher will gather, share music with each other, and receive feedback from the instructor in a masterclass setting.

Other Open Studio Events

We occasionally hold informational talks, guest recitalists, guest masterclasses, and other informal events at our Bella Vista studio location (807 S 8th Street). Students have the opportunity to mix and mingle, discuss what they’ve been learning, or develop relationships that go beyond music.
