From Our Piano Studio To Your Home
If you have a fast internet connection and access to a webcam, you can sign up for live online piano lessons with the Philadelphia Piano Institute. In-person piano lessons in Philadelphia aren’t possible for everyone, and we can accomplish just as much via Skype, Zoom, or FaceTime. Online lessons are effective and efficient; we teach the same principles that we offer with in-person lessons, and while the medium is different, the product is the same.
The Philadelphia Piano Institute is also happy to partner with Skoove and Simply Piano. If you sign up and start learning songs, you may be supporting us by helping us earn a commission.
We use Zoom technology for recording and teaching online, so sound and/or video quality won't be an issue. We also utilize the ManyCam app, so you or your child will be able to see their instructor from multiple camera angles. If you're interested, let’s set up a time to discuss the best online piano lesson times available and test your connection and video quality.
Online Piano Lessons for Adults
Are you an adult looking for a new creative outlet or skill, or would you like to improve your piano or keyboard playing? We offer piano lessons online for adults, and thanks to modern technology, they are just as effective as lessons in person at the studio. Online lessons work for adults for several reasons:
The unpredictability of a busy schedule
If you travel frequently, take lessons on the road.
Older adults may not feel healthy enough to leave home, but they may still enjoy playing.
Adults often absorb information best through watching, talking & listening, so the detached nature of online lessons won’t hinder the learning experience.
It’s never too late for an adult to learn the piano, so get in touch today.
Piano Lessons Online for Children & Teenagers
We work with children and teenagers through online piano lessons as well, and in some cases, virtual piano lessons may be a better fit than in-person lessons:
Young people are already used to learning and experiencing life through a screen.
Online lessons feel similar to video games, movies, and other digital entertainment.
Using technology is fun!
Our lessons are engaging and challenging, and our instructors give our pre-college piano students a strong foundation in reading, playing by ear, music theory, technique, and more. Please get in touch if you would like to learn more about our instructors’s teaching styles and philosophies.
Online Music Lesson Info: Length, Equipment & Pricing
Lesson Length and Pricing
Just like lessons held at the studio, we offer 30 minute, 45 minute and 60 minute lessons once a week. For very young students (early elementary age) we recommend 30-minute lessons. For more advanced students who are playing longer repertoire or have a more mature attention span, 45-60 minutes is a better fit. 30 minute lessons are reserved for students under 18 years of age. Note- billing is on a monthly basis.
What Equipment Do You Need?
Most laptops now come with a decent webcam, audio, and mic, but you’re more than welcome to use a higher-quality camera, microphone, and/or speakers. The intent is that both you and your instructor have a good internet connection so that you can have a smooth, interruption-free lesson. You’ll be able to see your instructor from different angles, since we use multiple cameras and the ManyCam app. But you by no means need to get multiple cameras. You’ll need:
High speed internet
Webcam with functioning audio, headphones, and mic
A piano or keyboard, and a bench.
What Will You Learn?
In short, our instructors at Philadelphia Piano Institute will give you the tools to become an independent musician. That means they will cover the fundamentals of music theory, reading, and proper playing technique with you.
Our instructors have studied and played many genres of music, but the classical repertoire provides the best foundation for a well-rounded pianist. That said, we offer classical piano lessons online to help you practice your playing technique, but all genres of music are valuable. So please be open about what you want to play! Our instructors have worked with students on classical music, jazz, and rock, and whether you like Miles Davis, Queen, or Mozart, we want to help you achieve your musical aspirations.
What Are Some Benefits Unique to Piano Lessons Online?
Logistically speaking, it doesn't get any easier than online piano lessons. Just sit down at the keyboard, log on to your computer, and enjoy your lesson.
Children and teenagers are increasingly learning through online platforms; the Khan Academy, Duolingo, and other online learning tools have changed how students process information, so your child may learn the piano better through an online medium.
Take lessons from anywhere: if you live in a region or country where high level, professional piano instruction isn't readily available, online lessons might be perfect for you. We’re happy to teach students from any country or continent as long as we can work out our time-zone differences! We also have students who have homes in multiple cities or countries; they would rather not disrupt their learning continuity, so they take online lessons when they are away.
How Are You Different From the Hoffman Academy, FlowKey, PlayGround Sessions & Other Platforms?
Our lessons follow a traditional piano lessons model — we meet with students “live” for a set period of time — while the Hoffman Academy provides a video series with related materials that you can access at will. Also, the Hoffman model is geared towards young children, and while it can be an effective method for teaching beginner piano lessons online, it isn’t flexible to your needs or goals, and you don’t have the benefit of an actual teacher on your side. We certainly recommend taking personalized lessons with an actual teacher, but if you have any questions, we’re happy to answer them!
Furthermore, many popular piano lesson services focus on immediate deliverables — if you take this piano class online, you will come away know how to play [insert song]. This is akin to learning tunes on YouTube, and some people prefer that style of learning and simply want to be able to play a song or two for friends or family.
If you want to actually learn how to play the piano, though, and not just memorize how to play a particular song by rote, you will need to enroll in interactive piano lessons online or in person.
If you would like more information about the value of live lessons vs. video series, feel free to call or send an email. We offer in person music lessons in Philadelphia to students of all ages.
