Expert, Piano-Specific Services

Moving a piano is different (and much harder!) than moving a bed or a couch, and we have the equipment and experience necessary to negotiate tough piano moves. We use only the finest skid boards, tools, trucks, straps, and more - keeping our movers, your piano, and your property safe is our primary concern.

Fully Insured

It doesn’t matter how skilled your piano movers are, an uninsured move is a bad idea. Your piano will be fully covered throughout the duration of the move, and we are happy to show you documentation if necessary.

How To Move a Piano

How do you move a piano? Very carefully.

All jokes aside, if you do feel the urge to move your own piano, you need to be willing to disassemble the instrument if necessary (especially grands), measure all entrances and paths so you don’t get stuck, and recruit a few of your strongest friends. You also must accept the risk that something or someone will get hurt in the process - we really recommend that you hire professional movers, as the value proposition for moving your own piano just isn’t worth it. More information for individuals of iron resolve:

How Much Does a Piano Weigh?

Regular upright pianos can weigh up to 550 lbs, but if you have an older model that’s closer to 5 feet tall (or God forbid you have an old player piano model), you’re looking at close to 1,000 lbs. Those pianos are not only heavy -- they have an odd weight distribution, so moving it with 4 people will still be extremely difficult and dangerous.

Baby grand pianos vs. concert grands have roughly the same comparison; you’re looking at up to 500 lbs for a baby grand and closer to 1,000 lbs for a concert grand. You’ll have to remove the legs of a grand piano either way for a move, so that will slightly reduce the weight.

How To Move an Upright Piano Vs. Moving a Grand Piano

Some materials you will need for moving a grand piano:

  • Screwdriver or drill

  • Piano/Skid board

  • Heavy duty dolly

  • Everyone you know with a strong back

  • Moving straps and plenty of blankets to protect the piano

Do not start transporting your piano until you have taken detailed measurements of its height and width and compared those to the measurements of your hallways, doorways, staircases, and vehicle. You don’t want to get stuck halfway through a move.

For a grand piano, you’ll have to remove detachable pieces like the legs and pedals, and label those pieces before you store them for transport. This is more valuable than Ikea furniture! Then strap your instrument to the piano board and hope for the best. Of course, make sure the body of the piano and the legs are wrapped in moving blankets at all times.

If you have a small upright piano, you should be able to move it with the help of a few friends and a dolly. If your move involves challenging staircases, though, it really isn’t worth the risk to move it on your own (how many holes in your wall do you really want?). For large upright pianos or particularly tall instruments, the weight might make it impossible for you to safely move it on your own, and if you have a higher-end upright “grand” like a Schimmel K132, don’t try and move it on your own.
